The email in the reel above, published 15 October 2026, contains 予約. The clerk at the night desk says 仮予約です。 The next line is まだ確定していません。 This page is those two sentences: what the hold is, why 予約 in the mail is not a room, and what you ask before you stop looking.

What does 仮予約です mean in a Japanese hotel email?

仮予約です (kari yoyaku desu) means this booking is only a provisional hold. 仮 (kari) is the temporary piece. Shogakukan's Digital Daijisen, on Kotobank, checked 18 October 2026, gives sense 1 as 間に合わせであること (ma ni awase de aru koto), a makeshift. The kanji note on the same page says it is not the real thing and not the full form. 予約 (yoyaku) is the promise made ahead of time. Daijisen's sense 1, checked the same day, is 前もって約束すること。また、その約束。 (Mae motte yakusoku suru koto. Mata, sono yakusoku.) A promise made in advance, and the promise itself. The compound puts the makeshift in front of the promise. The reel's second sentence is まだ確定していません。 (Mada kakutei shite imasen.) まだ (mada) means not yet. 確定していません means it has not been fixed. Daijisen defines 確定 (kakutei) as はっきりと定まること。また、定めること。 (Hakkiri to sadamaru koto. Mata, sadameru koto.) The reading is かくてい. The room has not been settled. An email that stops at 仮予約です。 has not given you the room.

How do you pronounce 仮予約です?

Say ka-ri yo-ya-ku de-su, seven beats: か, り, よ, や, く, で, す. Daijisen reads 仮 as かり and 予約 as よやく. 仮 here is the kun reading, kari. The on readings ka and ke are the wrong sound in this word. Every vowel in 予約 is short. There is no long o, and there is no small っ. です is two short beats. The next sentence, まだ確定していません。, is twelve beats: ま, だ, か, く, て, い, し, て, い, ま, せ, ん. 確定 is four beats, か, く, て, い. The てい is two beats. Folding it into one long syllable drops a beat. The ん at the end of ません is its own beat. There is no か on the end. The line is a statement.

Does the word 予約 in the email mean the room is yours?

No. 予約 sits in a finished booking and in a hold. 仮 is the piece that changes it. The mail in the reel already contains 予約, and the clerk still says 仮予約です。 The association 日本秘湯を守る会 (Nihon Hitō o Mamoru Kai), on its booking FAQ checked 18 October 2026, splits the two mails. An instant booking is established when the receipt arrives. An inquiry is not. Receiving 宿泊予約問合せ受付メール does not establish the reservation. The status reads 予約確認中 (yoyaku kakunin-chū), still being checked. The inn calls, and the stay exists only after both sides confirm. The inn may be unable to accept. A reservation number on a 予約確認中 line does not upgrade the hold. A vacancy reply is a second trap. Yunohana Onsen in Shizuoka, on its own guide dated 20 May 2024 and still up on 18 October 2026, has no instant booking. A mail that only asks 空いていますか (aite imasu ka), is it free, can be answered 空いています and still not be a booking. You need a clear request and the inn's 予約確定 reply. That vacancy can fill later. The guide names the bad arrival: 予約が入っていませんよ。 (Yoyaku ga haitte imasen yo.) There is no reservation on the book.

How is 仮予約です different from 予約確定?

予約確定 (yoyaku kakutei) means the reservation has been clearly decided. 仮予約です。 is the state before that. On Jalan's how-to page, checked 18 October 2026, the screen after you enter your details is 予約前の最終確認. The reservation is not yet established there. The button is 予約を確定する (yoyaku o kakutei suru). Pressing it forms the lodging contract with the property, and the page says the booking is fixed at that press. まだ確定していません。 is the sentence from the other side of that button. Rakuten Travel's help, checked the same day, says a booking is established online, and receiving the mail is not what establishes it. You click the final button. If a room is free and you meet the conditions, the next screen shows a reservation number. That finished booking can still be invisible at the desk. The help for the call that gets "we have no reservation" says the notice usually arrives within about an hour. Wait for 予約完了(宿泊施設確認済) (yoyaku kanryō, shukuhaku shisetsu kakunin-zumi): booking complete, and the property has checked it. Jalan says the property is notified within 24 hours. That lag is a finished booking the desk has not opened. It is not 仮予約です。 予約完了, 予約成立 (yoyaku seiritsu), and 予約確定 are the fixed booking on those pages. 仮予約, 予約確認中, and 問合せ (toiawase, an inquiry) are the hold.

How is 仮予約です different from 予約しています?

予約しています (yoyaku shite imasu) means I have a reservation. You say it. The passport check-in page teaches that line, and the next thing the clerk needs is the passport. The speaker is the guest, and the claim is that a booking exists. 仮予約です。 flips both. The clerk says it, and the claim is that the mail is only a hold. Saying 予約しています。 does not correct her. She has already read the 仮. The restaurant page about coming now is a third case. 今から行っても大丈夫ですか。 (Ima kara itte mo daijōbu desu ka.) asks a shop if you can walk over without a booking. It is not an email that looks like a room. One line tells the desk you have a stay. One tells you the email is not a stay. One asks if you can come now.

What do you say when the clerk says 仮予約です?

On the phone, before you travel, ask 予約は確定していますか。 (Yoyaku wa kakutei shite imasu ka.) The particle は is wa. At the desk, after she has said it is not confirmed, say 確定でお願いします。 (Kakutei de onegai shimasu.) Please make it confirmed. If she can, the next mail should say 予約確定, 予約完了, or 予約成立. If she cannot, that email did not confirm a room for you. Ask 今夜、部屋はありますか。 (Kon'ya, heya wa arimasu ka.) Do you have a room tonight? 今夜 (kon'ya) is three beats: こ, ん, や. A 予約番号 (yoyaku bangō) is the number to read out when Rakuten or Jalan already calls the booking complete and the desk has not opened the notice. The same number on a 予約確認中 mail is not that case. Once the stay is confirmed, the passport page still applies. The clerk copies the passport. The hold and the copy are different moments.

仮予約です。 means the email is a provisional hold. まだ確定していません。 means the room is not fixed. Look for 予約確定 before you treat the mail as a bed.
