At the ropeway, the ferry and the highway bus window, the return ticket is quietly cheaper than two singles, and nobody offers it to you in English.

Why this phrase
Ropeways, ferries, cable cars, highway buses and many private railways sell a discounted round trip ticket, but the window will sell you a single if a single is what you ask for. Teach the one word that changes the transaction: 往復 for round trip, against 片道 for one way. Frame it as the word to SAY at the window and the word to HEAR when they ask which you want. Do NOT promise a fixed discount percentage, and do NOT claim JR long distance tickets work this way, because the JR round trip discount was abolished. Keep it to the local operators where the return fare is a posted product on the board.
