Why this phrase

Tourist souvenir streets mix genuine Japanese crafts with cheaper imported versions of the same object, and the difference is rarely on the English signage. 日本製 is the word to ask for and the word printed on the tag. Frame this warmly: shops that stock domestic crafts are proud of it, so this is a normal, welcome question, not an accusation. Kofuku is curious, not policing.
