Japan's red mailboxes have two slots. One says letters and postcards. The other one just says "everything else", and that's the one your postcard home wants.

Why this phrase
The left slot is 手紙・はがき, standard letters and postcards. The right one is その他の郵便物, everything else: overseas, express, anything oversized. Your postcard to Sydney goes right. Drop it left and it still arrives fine, it just makes extra work at sorting.
