Why this phrase

Dialogue: Kofuku is the tourist at the rental counter with a dead pocket Wi-Fi and no other maps; Hana runs the counter. Kofuku slides the dead device over and says 壊れました, Hana responds with the standard two options, swap right now or coming right up. The takeaway is 壊れました, the polite past of 'it broke', the all-purpose sentence for every gadget failure on the trip. Note the pattern difference versus つながらない: the internet on the phone being down is fine, the device itself dying is 壊れました.
