Japan Went Cashless. This Cafe Still Will Not Take Your Card for a Four Hundred Yen Coffee.

Why this phrase

Hana is staff at a small independent cafe; Kofuku is the customer holding an iced coffee and a credit card and no cash at all. She points, apologetically, at a small handwritten card taped by the till: 「カードのご利用は1,000円以上から」. The reveal is that plenty of small Japanese shops, cafes, izakaya and family run places accept cards only above a minimum spend, and the minimum is posted in Japanese only, usually handwritten, usually somewhere you were never looking. Be careful and honest here: this is NOT a national rule and not a law, and the big chains, konbini and department stores have no minimum. It is a thing SOME independent places do, and knowing it exists is what stops the panic. The rescue is to ask before you order rather than after: 「カードはいくらから使えますか？」, from how much can I use a card. Teach it in three chunks, カードは, いくらから, 使えますか, so a beginner can actually say it. Give the shorter fallback too, 「カードは使えますか？」, for anyone who cannot hold the longer sentence yet. Close on the practical habit: in Japan, carry a few thousand yen in cash even in 2026, because the one place that will not take your card is never the place you expected.
