The weather map is following the leaves. The reel above is the short version: cherry blossoms move north, and autumn color moves south. This page is the word on that map, the line you say when the color arrives, and the 2026 dates for the cities.
What does 紅葉前線 mean, and which way do Japan's autumn leaves move?
紅葉前線 (kōyō zensen) means the autumn-leaves front. 紅葉 (kōyō) is the leaves turning red. In this compound the reading is kōyō. The maple-tree reading, momiji, is a different use of the same kanji, and it comes up below. 前線 (zensen) is a front, the same word a forecast uses for a rain front. Together, the two words name a wave of color that weather shows draw across Japan. The wave starts in the north and on the high mountains, then moves south and downhill. On 2 September 2026 the Japan Weather Association called the start. Alpine azalea, ウラシマツツジ (urashimatsutsuji), had begun to redden near the summit of 黒岳 (Kurodake) in 大雪山 (Daisetsuzan), a little later than a typical year. On the 27 September 15:00 report, tenki.jp listed three Hokkaido spots at 紅葉見頃 (kōyō migoro), peak color: Kurodake, the foliage valley at 層雲峡 (Sōunkyō), and 大雪高原温泉 (Daisetsu Kōgen Onsen). The same list had peak color at 立山・室堂平 (Tateyama Murodōdaira) in the Japan Alps and at 尾瀬 (Oze), in the mountains of Gunma. The front moves south from the north, and it also moves downhill from the peaks. Hokkaido as a whole was still only 色づき始め (irozuki hajime), the first tint. Tokyo and Osaka were still 青葉 (aoba), green leaves.
How do you say the autumn-leaves front has arrived?
Say 紅葉前線が来ましたね。 (kōyō zensen ga kimashita ne). That means "the autumn-leaves front has arrived, hasn't it." 来ました (kimashita) is the polite past of "to come." ね (ne) invites the other person to agree. The reel uses this line once the map has reached the place you are talking about. Say it to a desk clerk, a guide, or the person beside you when the slope outside has actually turned. It is a comment. It does not ask for a date. If you want a yes or a no about today's trees, use the question in the last section. If the trees are still green, this sentence is early, and the person will usually tell you the color is still to the north, or still up the mountain.
When does the 2026 紅葉前線 reach Hokkaido, Tokyo, and Kyoto?
City maples turn later than the peaks. Japan Meteorological Corporation's first 2026 forecast, released on 2 September, puts the maple viewing day around 7 November in Sapporo, 29 November in Tokyo, and 11 December in Kyoto. Osaka is around 4 December. That day means the first day most of the sample tree's leaves have turned. In Hokkaido the sample trees are mountain maple, big maple, and itaya maple, because the iroha maple is hard to grow there. Sapporo's 7 November is ten days after the local average of 28 October. Tokyo's 29 November is one day after the average of 28 November, which the forecast calls about average. The same release expects a warmer autumn than normal, so many places land on time or late. It names Sapporo, Nagano, and a few other spots as nine days or more behind average. For northern Japan it expects mountain color from early October through mid-November, and color on the plains from mid-October through late November. The next release is planned for early October, so check the map again before you lock the hotel. A red slope at Kurodake this week is that high-country peak. The maples in the city below it are a later week.
How is 紅葉前線 different from 桜前線?
桜前線 (sakura zensen) is the cherry-blossom front, and it travels the other way. Blossoms open in the south first, and the wave climbs toward Hokkaido. 紅葉前線 starts in the north and moves toward Kyushu, and it also drops from the ridgeline into the valley. A sakura calendar will place you under the wrong trees. The reel's booking rule is the direction: chase the front. In late September 2026 that means high country. Kyoto's sample maples are forecast for 11 December, six days after the average of 5 December. The company's summary still calls western Japan about average, and 11 December is the date to plan around. A hillside that is red in Hokkaido on 27 September does not mean the temple gardens in Kyoto have turned.
What is the difference between 紅葉 on the news and 紅葉狩り?
On the news, 紅葉 is the color change, read kōyō. 紅葉狩り (momijigari) is the outing: you go to the trees on purpose. 狩り (gari) means hunting, and in this word it means a visit. The same pattern is ぶどう狩り (budō-gari), grape picking, on the grape-picking reel. You may also hear the on-reading kōyōgari for those same kanji. The tree itself is often もみじ (momiji), the other reading of 紅葉. A forecast that prints 黄葉 (kōyō) means ginkgo yellow. The reading matches 紅葉, and the kanji are what split red maple from yellow ginkgo. Japan Meteorological Corporation says ginkgo colors while the air is still a little warmer, so the yellow often shows before the maple red. A street of ginkgo and a valley of maples in the same city can peak in different weeks.
What do you ask if you want to know whether the leaves are at their best?
Ask 紅葉はもう見頃ですか? (kōyō wa mō migoro desu ka), "are the autumn leaves already at their best?" In this question the kanji are read kōyō, the same reading as the front. 見頃 (migoro) is the short window when the color is worth the trip. もう (mō) means already. The peak-color reel is that one question. Use it at a hotel desk, a station, or a trailhead. A national map and the slope in front of you can disagree by weeks. 見頃 means the color is ready. 色づき始め means the first tint, still early. 色あせ始め (iroase hajime) means the color is fading. 落葉 (rakuyō) means the leaves have fallen. If the answer is "not yet," ask which week, and ask whether they mean the peak above town or the trees in town.
Three lines cover the season. 紅葉前線 (kōyō zensen) is the wave on the weather map, from the north toward the south and from the peaks toward the valleys. 紅葉前線が来ましたね。 marks the day that wave reaches you. 紅葉はもう見頃ですか? asks whether the trees outside are worth the stop. On 27 September 2026 the high places on the tenki.jp list were already at peak, and the 2 September city-maple forecast sits in November for Sapporo and Tokyo and in December for Kyoto.
